Kurzfassung
Neue
HST -F OS-, NTT -EMMI-, und Keck-HIRES-Spektren des Gravitationslinsenquasars
HE 1104 Gamma1805 AB ( ze = 2,31), und neue
HST -FOS-Spektren des Doppelquasars HS
1216+5032 AB ( ze
(A) ungefähr ze
HE 1104 - 1805 sind fünf C IV +Mg II -Absorber
bei z = 1,66 (Abstand
zwischen den Sehlinien: Sortho = 8,3 h50-1
kpc).
Drei davon sind mit einem
gedämpften Ly alpha -System (DLA) mit
log N (H I ) = 20,85 cm-2
und Z DLA ungefähr
1/10 Zomega
mit log N (H I )
= 17,57 cm-2
assoziiert. Ein Vergleich
mit Photoionisationsmodellen ergibt Ionizationsparameter
log Gamma= -2,95 bis
-2,35, Radialdimensionen
0.5 bis 1.6 kpc und Wasserstoffsdichte
nH < 0,01 cm-3 . Die Detektion v on O
Absorptionssysteme in HE 1104-1805 werden
enthält eine signifikante He II -Lyman-Kante.
, C II , N III
, C III , O VI
, N V , und möglicherweise S IV . Intergalaktische
Metalliniensysteme werden auch diskutiert.
Wolkendimensionen von Ly
alpha-W ald-Systemen werden durch die in
den FOS-Spektren zu beobachtenden
Linien eingeschränkt. Die Linien in HE
1104-1805 setzen eine Untergrenze
für Wolkendurchmesser
von 60 h-150 kpc (2 sigma; z = 1 bis z = 1,7), die auch für die Rotverschiebungbereiche z =1,7 bis
z = 2,3 gefunden wurde (Smette et al.
1995). Für Linien in
HS 1216+5032 ( S ortho
= 80 h-150 kpc) können sowohl
eine untere als auch eine obere Grenze
gesetzt w erden, nämlich
118 < D < 394 h-150 kpc (2 sigma; < z > = 1, 3).
Dieses Ergebnis ist in guter
Übereinstimmung mit den
Äquivalentbreitendifferenzen
zwischen A- und B-Linien. Die
Äquivalentbreiten
deuten auch auf zusammenhängende
Strukturen hin. Werden die
Wolken als Filamente modelliert, so
findet man um einen Faktor zwei kleinere
Filamentendurchmesser. Die
Vermutung, daß Wolkendimensionen
größer werden mit abnehmender
Rotverschiebung, wird nicht bestätigt.
I present new HST FOS, NTT EMMI, and Keck HIRES spectra of the gravitationally-lensed double QSO HE 1104 - 1805 AB ( ze = 2.31), and new HST F OS spectra of the QSO pair HS 1216+5032 AB ( ze (A) aprox. ze (B) = 1.45). These spectra are used to study physical conditions in intergalactic absorption systems observ ed in the two lines of sigh t (LOSs) to ward each of the QSO pairs. The most outstanding systems in HE 1104 - 1805 are CIV + Mg II absorbers clustered around z = 1, 66 (LOS separation: Sorth = 8,3 h-150 kp c). Three of these systems are associated with a damped Ly alpha(DLA) system with log N (H I ) = 20,85 cm-2 and Z DLA ' 1/10 Zomega , which is observed in the ultra violet spectrum of the brighter QSO image, A. The other two systems (B) are associated with a Lyman-limit system with log N (H I ) = 17,57 cm -2 . Photoionization models lead to ionization parameters of log Gamma = - 2,95 to - 2,35, LOS extents of 0.5 to 1.6 kpc and a hydrogen density of nH <= 0,01 cm3. The absorption systems to B are found to have a metallicity 0.63 times lower than that of the DLA gas. The detection of OIVat z = 1,66253 = 1,66253 in both QSO spectra gives for the first time direct evidence that this ion must arise in very extended absorbers. According to the model calculations, and in support to this detection, the C IV clouds should b e surrounded by large (LOS size aprox. 100 kpc) highly ionized (log Gamma >= 1,2) low density ( nH aprox.10-4 cm-3) O VI clouds. These results are discussed in the framework of the disk/halo and hierarchical structure formation models. I discuss other absorption systems in HE 1104 - 1805 in view of the new Keck HIRES data, paying special attention to an za aprox. ze system. For this system, evidence is found that (1) the gas is photoionized; (2) the abundance ratios do not follow the solar values; (3) the absorbers completely cover the emitting region; and (4) there needs to b e a significant He II Lyman edge in the ionizing continuum. Independently of the above results, I show that considerations about the geometry of the z = 2,30 systems can provide important constraints on the intensity of the ionizing field. In HS 1216+5032 an unsual broad- absorption-line system is observed only in the B spectrum (small outflow velocity of aprox. 4000 km s-1 ; probably mixture of broad and narrow components). Observed ions are : H I , C II , N III C III, O IV, N V and possibly S IV . Intervening systems in HS 1216+5032 are also discussed. The transverse size of low-redshift Ly alpha forest clouds is constrained using Sortho(z) at redshifts of lines detected in the HST FOS spectra. The lines in HE 1104 - 1805 place a lower limit on cloud diameters of 60 h-150 kpc (2 sigma ) for the redshift interval z = 1 to z = 1,7. This is the same limit found for clouds at redshifts between z = 1,7 and z = 2, 3 (Smette et al. 1995). In HS 1216+5032 ( Sortho = 80 h-150 kpc) only four Ly alpha systems are found to produce W 0 > 0,17 Angstroem lines common to both spectra, out of nine selected systems. This sample, although scarce due to the redshift path blocked out by the BALs in B, places lower and upper limits on the transverse cloud sizes of 118 < D < 394 h-150 kpc (2 sigma ) for absorbers at < z > = 1.3. This result is consistent with the observed equivalent width differences between lines in A and B. The equivalent widths also provide evidence for coherent structures. If the clouds are modelled as filamentary structures, lower transverse dimensions by a factor of 2 are derived. The suggestion that the size of Ly alpha forest clouds increases with decreasing redshift is not confirmed.
